Rail Safety Week
9.25.2023
In honor of Rail Safety Week, Drummac, Inc. has teamed up with Operation Lifesaver, Inc. (OLI) to educate the public on making safe and responsible decisions around trains and tracks. Operation Lifesaver is a non-profit organization dedicated to rail safety, and Drummac is proud to support the mission.
Rail Safety Week (September 18th-24th) is recognized by Operation Lifesaver Inc., as well as Operation Lifesaver Canada and the Mexican Association of Railroads (AMF), along with the reinforcements of many others in the rail industry including Drummac. All parties seek to raise awareness and prevent railroad crossing and trespass incidents within their communities. Every year, 2,100 North Americans are killed or seriously injured when they engage in unsafe behavior around tracks or trains when preventable measures could have been taken. Many Drummac employees from the East regions to the Pacific Northwest and California have taken the pledge to rail safety and spread the word to loved ones and families. Drummac also encourages their employees and provides the opportunity to be an Operation Lifesaver Volunteer (OLAV) through training. We have had around 85 staff participate in the classes, with 15 employees serving as volunteer instructors, and one serving as a national coach. As our employees are constantly reminded and exposed to the dangers of trains and tracks, they take pride in voicing precautions. These precautions can include small steps such as:
- Always expect a train, trains can move on any track, in either direction at any time.
- Never walk on tracks; it's illegal trespassing and highly dangerous.
- Trains cannot stop quickly.
- Trains have the right-of-way 100% of the time over pedestrians and vehicles, including police and emergency vehicles.
- Trains overhang tracks. Stay 15 feet back from the tracks.
- Stay alert around railroad tracks. Refrain from texting, using headphones or other distractions that would prevent you from hearing an approaching train; never mix rails and recreation.
Together, we have helped minimize the number of incidents and are making high-yielding progress towards stopping track tragedies entirely.
